Hi doctor. Thank you for taking my question. My friend is 72 years old and had the flu vaccine in the fall. The last 2 weeks he had stomach problems, vomiting and diarrhea about 5 times. Can it be the flu or something more serious? I am sorry but I don t see the answer to my question.
Noted the history about your 72 year old friend. Flu vaccine usually does not cause such symptoms. The vomiting and diarrhea is suggestive of gastroenteritis which can be due to either vial or bacterial infection. This can be confirmed by blood and stool tests. If there is any bacterial infection he will be given a course of an antibiotic active against intestinal infection and metronidazole. In wither case maintenance of hydration and electrolyte balance is a must. Also needed is pre and probiotics. To take plenty of oral fluids. Eat soft and bland diet. Consult a Doctor for clinical evaluation, investigations and prescription based medications.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. T Chandrakant, General Surgeon
