What Causes Vomiting?

My brother has had liver cancer for 3 years, yes it's amazing he has lived that long. His abdominal girth is 60 inches filled full of ascites, last night he started vomiting at 1am and did not stop until 7am, there was mucus in the emesis and also fluid which was brown, is it possible this is the end for him?
