What Causes Watery Diarrhoea And Fluid In Abdomen?
Hi ,My mom is 87 yrs old and has several health issues going on with no diagnois. Her cga level is elevated (414) blood is low (8.7) uric acid is high (n/a) but is starting her on allpurinol-she is on bp meds cholesterol meds, cultricine,lasix,amitriptline-has had an octreotide shot-but still no tumors have been found-she has had watery diarehea for about 5 months-fluid in abodomen and feet-bluish color palms-bloody nose-any ideas what is going on? Thanks-Fern
It is likely she has a neuroendocrine tumor somewhere and/or severe liver disease. The CGA level is very high, which is commonly seen in tumors like carcinoid or pheochromocytoma. These type of tumors can be benign or malignant. They release excess hormones into the blood that can cause watery diarrhea, as well as other symptoms, depending on the type of hormone produced. CGA may be particularly elevated if the neuroendocrine tumor has metastasized into the liver. Fluid in the abdomen is called ascites. It can occur with various types of tumors, cirrhosis of the liver, and similar serious conditions. Octreotide is used to treat neuroendocrine tumors and also for portal hypertension, which is blockage of the major vein in the liver. Your mom is also very anemic. This often occurs with tumors and also with liver disease. If the liver is not working properly, it doesn't produce enough of the proteins that help the blood clot, so bloody noses or other types of bleeding can occur more easily. Neuroendocrine tumors can be located anywhere in the body. They often occur somewhere in the intestinal tract. Frequently they are very tricky to find and are identified partly by the symptoms they produce and blood tests such as CGA and measurement of particular hormone levels that they might be producing. Hope this answers your query.
