What Causes Weakness In Legs?

My weakness started in my right toes; progressed to my R foot; then my left. My legs have been very weak for months. I have to hold on to something or someone, to get up steps. Was in the recently hospital for a week. They weren t sure. One doctor said Neuropathy. One said Parethesia. I have been taking Neurontin, but it doesn t help. Any ideas? I have been on medical disability and have exhausted all the money I had in the bank, paying bills. Thanks for your time.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Dear patient weakness in leg may be caused by 1. Disc prolapse in lumbar spine 2. Peripheral neuropathy.3. Rare cause brain infarct.
U didn't mentioned your age. Peripheral neuropathy is usual bilateral involvement. Disc prolapse can lead to unilateral weakness. You need to be investigated to come to exact diagnosis. I would advise mri of lumbosacral spine and nerve conduction velocity study of both lower limbs which would confirm diagnosis and help in planning treatment. If report turns abnormal take a visit to neurologist. All the best.
