What Causes Weight Gain After A Bilateral Oophorectomy?

2 years ago I went through a bilateral oophorectomy and I ve been miserable ever since. Within the first 3 months I gained 50 pounds and started having hot flashes. However, I ve continued to gain weight and my hot flashes are now a constant hot flash and I sweat constantly. I ve gained a total of 70 pounds and no matter how hard I try I cannot lose it, simply just slowed down my rate of gaining. What can I do to help with the weight and hot flash problems.

Hello and thank you for your question. Having your ovaries removed changes your metabolism and you must make changes in your diet and activity level to counter this in order to not gain weight. First I suggest that you see your doctor to make sure that your thyroid levels are normal and that you have not developed diabetes. Your doctor can also prescribe something to counter the hot flashes. Next you need to figure out about how many calories you are eating in your diet daily and cut that by about 500 calories per day. Cutting out sweets and way back on other carbohydrates like bread, pasta, potatoes and rice can also help. Doing at least one hour of exercise like waling daily will also help you get back to a normal weight.

Brief answer
Hormone Replacement Therapy

Detailed answer

since you have undergone oophorectomy such symptoms are common due to hormonal imbalance.
I would suggest such a patient in my clinic first to get hormonal studies including thyroid hormone and subsequent management as per the lab findings

if you can update me with such reports i would be able to guide you better

thanks for using HCM
good luck
