Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter takes 60 mg. of Prozac daily as well as .5 mg. of Risperidone for irritability. She was diagnosed with depression 3 years ago and is now 17 years old. Since beginning Risperidone about 8 montsh ago she has gained about 20 lbs and even though she watches what she eats and works out at the gym, she is having difficulty losing the extra weight. Since her general mood has been better I m wondering if I could half the Risperidone and give her .25 daily? What would the danger of taking her off it altogether be? I will also consult with her psychiatrist but I also wanted a second opinion. Thank you
You are right, both Prozac and Resperidon can cause weight gain. Once patient is stable and feeling well we can always think of reducing the dose and even stopping it all together. If she is really fine we can even think of stopping the drugs.
However nothing should be done without prior consultation of your doctor and these drugs should never be stopped abruptly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman , General & Family Physician
