What Causes White Stools In Children?

our 6-year old has been having white stools and has dark circles under her eyes. She is taking the third antibiotic since August, the first one being treatment for an abscessed tooth. One was for strep about 3 1/2 weeks ago, and now she has chest congestion. What could be causing the white stools? Her doctor drew blood yesterday to be tested.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

White or clay color stools may be due to obstructive jaundice or cholestasis or drugs or malabsorption or hepatitis etc.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.

Please get it done liver function tests, stool examination for stercobilinogen and urine examination for bile salts and bile pigment, complete blood picture and ultrasound abdomen etc.

Please consult your physician/gastroenterologist, he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
