What Could Be The Cause Of A Painful, Sore, Protruding Nipple Considering No Lumps In The Breast?

My right nipple suddenly feels painful this evening and it is protruding whilst the other one isn't. I am 38 year old female, otherwise healthy, regular periods. I have been having breast pain on and off, so my GP did examine my breast about two weeks ago, but didn't detect any lumps or anything of any concern. What could be the cause of this sore, protruding nipple. Sudden onset just this evening.

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health query.
Nipple tenderness is mostly hormonal.
It occurs at certain phases in the menstrual cycle, mostly pre menstrual due to fluid retention.
IT occurs in response to cold weather also.
Sometimes, pinching / overstimulation during sex could cause this.
An accidental bite while feeding a child could be the reason.
Deficiency of vitamin E often causes breast pain and nipple tingling.
Take daily vitamin E and evening primrose oil supplements.
Please have a mammogram if the pain persists.
It could also indicate an approaching nipple infection.
Do not wear tight and uncomfortable bras.
Take care.
