Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Could Be The Reason For Having Swelling On My Knee?
Good morning thank you Dr. I'm 45 years old. Two years ago I suffered from bad Sciatica and thank goodness I have been painlessly mobile since last July 2013, however now, for the past 3-4 weeks my knee from the same leg sporadically swells up for no reason at all, and although it doesn't work, it is uncomfortable when it cracks a few hours before it swells and of course during the swelled period, its hard to walk on it. I know it can be many things but I'd like to narrow down the possibilities of what it might be causing it. thank you
Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for your query. Although it isn't possible to diagnose your condition without an examination and a few tests, your history is suggestive of osteoarthritis knee. Often called wear-and-tear arthritis, osteoarthritis occurs when the protective cartilage on the ends of your bones wears down over time. Osteoarthritis treatments can slow the progression of the disease, relieve pain and improve joint function. I would suggest getting this evaluated by an orthopaedician for detailed examination. You may get the X-ray/MRI, some blood tests and joint fluid analysis under his/her guidance to reach the accurate diagnosis.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care
