What Could Be The Reason For Sudden Onset Of Pain In The Upper Left Quadrant Of Abdomen ?

1. Sudden onset of pain in the upper left quadrant of abdomen. Getting worse over the last two hours.
2. The pain is sharp. The area is tender to the touch. It is stronger at some times and weaker at others but never goes away completely.
3. I do have a cold and have been coughing quite a bit for three days; so a muscle pull is possible, but I did not notice it. The pain began suddenly when I was not coughing.
4. I have no fever.
5. 19 year old female, no chance of pregnancy.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi. Sudden pain in left upper quadrant of abdomen and tender to touch can be probably due to herpes as a first diagnosis. The other probable reasons can be colitis, left kidney stone and infection, pancreatitis at your age is a remote possibility. As you suspected it can be a muscle pull too. Apply hot fomentations and see if this is relieved.
