What Could Cause Bleeding In Between Periods Like Small Clots?

I have been very regular with my periods since I started at 12. I am 45 now. Every 28 days, normal all the way. I do have a copper IUD in place and have had it for about 3 years. I recently got off my period a week in a half ago and now I am bleeding in between periods. Not a lot coming onto a pad or using a tampon but enough that when I go to the restroom, it is very red on the toilet paper. I also notice small amounts of what I believe to be clots. Should I be concerned?

Hello,
The likely causes are some hormonal imbalance observed at your age, local lesions and the IUD itself. To diagnose, yo need to have a local examination by a specialist, a trans-vaginal sonogram and a complete hormonal evaluation if needed. A pap smear, a vaginal swab, blood counts and urinalysis are also needed. Polyps, erosions, cervicitis or vaginitis can thus be excluded. Sudden weight changes and stress also can cause this condition. Hope you find this information helpful. Wish you good health.
