Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Could Cause Constipation, Loss Of Appetite And Oversleeping In A 78-year-old With Gall Bladder And Liver Problems?
My mom is 78 years old. She is constipated and is running a fever about 99.1. She is also not eating and sleeping way too much. She has high blood pressure and has had some gall bladder and live problems. Please tell me what you think is happening now?
Has she had any surgery? If so, one of the most common causes of constipation and anorexia is the presence of abdominal adhesions. I suggest that you go to a general surgeon or primary care physician for examination because sleeping too much, in this case, can also be related to liver problems, where the brain can get damage (we call this encephalopathy.)
In some cases is normal that the bowels become slower as we age, but, specially for patients over 60, we need to be sure that everything is okay, as they tend to have less symptoms for severe conditions.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Jorge-Alberto Manzanares-Espinosa,
General & Family Physician
