What Could Cause Dizziness And Nausea In A 69-year-old Woman?
69-year old woman (wife) just came home from visiting her mother. While sitting outside, wife started to feel dizzy. Though maybe she needed food and ate an oatmeal cookie (about an hour ago). Did not feel better and returned home. Never made it inside house, threw up by driveway. Has thrown up 3 more times. Had oatmeal cereal, banana, orange juice for breakfast.
Although the causes of dizziness in older people are multifactorial, peripheral vestibular dysfunction is one of the most frequent causes. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is the most frequent form of vestibular dysfunction in the elderly, followed by Meniere's disease.
Peripheral vestibular dysfunction is currently thought to account for 48% of dizziness reported by older adults. Illness in the older adult is rarely caused by a single etiology and can be a result of vestibular hypofunction, undiagnosed benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, other medical conditions, polypharmacy, medication side-effects, or a combination of deficiencies in the visual, vestibular, and somatosensory systems. Consult a neurologist immediately.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
