What Could Cause My Stool To Smell Very Strongly Of Ammonia?

Hi, I am 46 yo and for the last 2-3 days I had more stools than usual. Started with 3-4 for the first couple of days and went up to about 6 today. Last one had a strong ammonia smell. It is not really diarrhea but when I have to go I have to go right away. I am gluten intolerant and for over 4 years I am on a gluten free diet and I am sure I did not ingest any gluten as I have cooked my own food. As a matter of fact, I don t know if this might make any difference, but I think I am going through menopause as for the last 3 months I had only one period (usually is every 22-24 days).

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,
Thanks for writing your query.

It would be helpful if you get your stool examined (Routine/Microscopic,ova,cyst and for Occult blood).

This foul smelling or ammonia like smell could be because of intestinal worms or parasites.

You can take Metronidazole 400 mg thrice a day, antihistamines (tab.avil or cetirizine available over the counter) along with an antacid like Ranitidine 150 mg twice day and a probiotic preparation.

Take tab. Albenazole 400 mg once dosage for deworming under your doctor's guidance.
I
Antibiotic like Ciprofloxacin 500 mg twice a day, if needed can be added according to the report of the stool examination.

Take care of your diet. You should eat light food, prepared in hygienic conditions.

Drink pure water only.

If the problem persists, get yourself examined clinically by gastro-physician.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Regards,
