What Could Cause Recurrent Swelling In A Child S Penile Shaft?

Hi, my son is nine years old and has a swelling at the base of his penil shaft. It looks like a pencil thick ring tha goes all around the base. He has had it before and it usually goes away after a day or two. He says that it doesn t hurt and I have explained that if he is touching it hard or placing soaps or creams on it, it may get swollen. But he insists he has touched it or hit it. Any ideas?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to Hcm,
I understand your concern. Let me assure you there seems to be no problem with your son especially because he is not symptomatic. The possibilities I can think of with your description are a tight skin fold, penile muscle tissue or just the scrotal covering rim. All these are normal and they can seem abnormal at times. So you should not worry and let your child enjoy his life. However, confirm diagnosis can only be made of the so called abnormality is seen by some specialist. So, I advice you to have a consult with your pediatrician and or a pediatric surgeon. Wish your son a great health. Take care.
