What Could Cause Sudden Headache At The Back With Flushed Feeling?

I was awakened between 2 & 4 am Monday morning with a pain on the back of my head on the lower left side. During the day the pain persisted but it traveled up and down the left side of my head. I took Advil and it only reduced the pain, it did not get rid of the pain. Today the pain exist, but the pain is traveling to different areas of my head. I am 66 years old and I recently joined a gym (I have not exercised since Friday). I am a fair skinned Black women and when I exercise my face becomes very flushed and I usually have a dull headache after leaving the gym. I am on hydrochlorothiazide, verapamil and K-Tab. Your input will be appreciated

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello,

There is an entity known as WEIGHTLIFTER'S HEADACHE as well as EXERCISE INDUCED HEADACHE.

Although you are not a weightlifter you still may be doing some weight training at your gym and you are to be commended. Keep up the terrific work.

It is possible that this new found level of physical activity is manifesting itself in the form of a headache by way of being one of these 2 types.

By becoming more acclimated to the routines and becoming a bit more conditioned (and by SLIGHTLY REDUCING the amount of any weights you may be trying to lift or use in your workouts) these headaches may become better.

On the other hand if you have any of these pains in the head which also include the NECK, the jaw, OR THE UPPER SPINAL area then, I recommend you see a neurologist for an evaluation to be sure you haven't got something called an arterial dissection that could have occurred either spontaneously or as a result of the increased activities.

Drink lots of fluids, don't take TOO MUCH over the counter medications, suspend all heavy exertional activities temporarily (until you know where these headaches are coming from), and don't wait very much longer to get a professional examination by a neurologist who will likely order imaging studies of the blood vessels in the head and neck.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dariush Saghafi, Neurologist
