What Could Constipation With Tearing Of Colon Suggest?

Hi. I went to the emergency room last night and was diagnosed with constipation. I was having a sharp stabbing pain on my right side for about 12 hours before I decided to go to the emergency room. He said that the radiologist saw stool on my right side and that I might have torn my colon. What does this mean?

Hello,

The tearing pain is due to stretching of underlying colon wall from loaded stools most likely. Immediate concern here is to rule out intestine perforation by x-ray abdomen standing position and then manage accordingly. When there is no perforation, soap water enema with supportive care and when there is a perforation, emergency surgery is the only choice.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
