What Could Have Led To Sudden Pain In Arm Of A Child?

hello, I have a question..my daughter was throwing a little tantrum this morning and was leaning against the wall in our hallway, all of a sudden she started screaming about pain in her right arm. She was holding it and screaming in agony...she also said she was hot and she was sweaty. I figured this came from the tantrum. I sat with her in front of a fan and within moments the pain in her arm disappeared. This was very scary and I'm wondering if I should call the doctor or if maybe it was a muscle spasm or something. She is 3 years old. Thanks.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
hi,

thanks for your question.

she could have had a pulled elbow. this is where the annular ligament around the radial head at the elbow joint slips from its usual position. there is a maneuver that can be performed to put it back into place but sometimes it spontaneously goes back into place.

this would explain her symptoms and the fact that they improves spontaneously.

there is nothing that you now need to do unless her symptoms return.

best wishes
