What Could Lumbar Area Pain That Can Lead To Dizziness Indicate?
Off and on for several years I will get back pain in the lumbar area and it usually last several days. It only hurts when I bend over and then try to straighten up. When I try to straighten up (slowly) I get very light headed and feel like I could pass out if I don't take it easy. After I straighten up the pain is gone. I am 58 years old and 5'9" tall
Your description is suggestive of a muscular skeletal pain, probably lumbar spondylosis with lumbar disc prolapse. I see patients with this problem in my practice. The light headedness is due to a decrease in the blood circulation in the brain due to the change in posture. You are likely to have cervical spondylosis along with the lumbar spondylosis which co-exist very often. Two blood vessels which supply the areas concerned with balance ( vertebral arteries) have their course through the cerebral vertebrae and the blood flow through them can be compromised due to the cervical spondylosis. Sudden change of gravity by straightening up may tilt the balance in the blood flow leading to dizziness. Another contributing factor can be the pain . You require to be investigated to confirm these. If you have further queries, I am available. Dr. Noble Zachariah, Kuwait
