Good evening, Dr. Thank you for being available. I had a stroke about 2 weeks ago...no residual damage but fatigue and loss of appetitie. I am 65 but am in excellent shape, which is why I am still alive for sure! In doing followup tests, my PCP has discovered I am anemic, low on iron and have a uriniary tract infection. I have a couple of questions...are these conditions related in any way to the stroke and what foods can I eat that are iron rich (I just started taking a TBSP of molasses every day) in addition to iron drops my doctor will prescribe. I know abut leafy greens, liver, etc....any other thoughts? My dr. is great but he doesn t give me much information about nutrition. thank you
Usually anemia and urinary tract infection are not the causes for stroke unless the anemia is very serious and urinary tract infection is chronic which may damage the kidney. Green leafy vegetables are rich source of iron. Jaggery and dried fruits are also good source of iron but if you are diabetic you cannot take them. Meat, poultry and fishes are also good source of iron. It is preferable that you take green leafy vegetables mostly because they have shown to prevent recurrance of strokes also.
