Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Do Pain In The Neck And Numbness In The Fingers Indicate?
I have pain in my right neck/shoulder area that seems to coincide with pain in my upper arm and tingling/numbness in my fingers, pinky and pointer mainly. Started 3-4 weeks ago on my left side...same issues, but now mainly in neck and right side. Doctor suggested MRI on 11/29 but opted to take Naproxen. My doctor is going to do referral for MRI. My question is...should I have taken all of the Naproxen and then see what was going on with pain??? I just realized that there are at least 30 pills and thought maybe I should take them as prescribed and then check to see if pain and numbness abates...Just happened to think of this. It also hurts when I cough...back of my neck. 63 year old female:)
Tingling of the fingers or other abnormal sensations imply that the nerves that supply the area are affected, this is called neuropathy. It may be temporary or permanent and there are different possible causes.
The MRI is to rule out trauma to the nerves. This would not be helped completely by the use of Naproxen or any other pain medication.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
