What Do Swelling And Inflammation Around The Left Ear Indicate?

Saturday night my 11 year old came to me with a locked jaw (couldn t open his mouth) and swelling and redness around his left ear. I m a pretty good Dr Mom and did all I was supposed to do, but it got worse and I took him to a Urgent Care (not ER). PA looked in ONE ear, asked him 3 questions and said he had a lot of fluid behind his ear. We were rushed out despite my need for clarification. Total bill? $160 for appx 3 minutes with the PA. He DID begin to get better, but TODAY he came home with several Herpes breakouts in his mouth and I m having to give him mega doses of Acyclovir every 2 hours. HELP ... did the 1st place (PA) miss something? The first PA charted many things that simply were not done or asked about. She also diagnosed him with a cold (which he DID NOT have) and she DID NOT tell us that. Any guidance appreciated.

The symptoms seem to be related to an ear infeciton.
Some advice that I can give are:
-use anti inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen 400 mg three times a day
-use ear drops for antibacterial effects
-if not better you should take prescribed antibiotics by your doctor.
