What Do Swelling In The Extremities And Shortness Of Breath While Suffering From Diabetes Indicate?

Hello Doctor Rynne. My husband is 65 and has type 2 diabetes. He suffers from retinopathy and neuropathy and is being treated for each, but lately he has been excessively tired and complains of difficulty breathing. His voice is weak. and he has considerable swelling in his extremities. He saw his doctor last week who scheduled an EKG for next week. I am worried that there is something else wrong. thank you!

Hi,

Your husband has chronic complication of Diabetes and in these circumstances I can say that he can have even heart and coronary condition that can be the cause of his new symptoms. Even a chronic kidney disease is possible because this condition is usually co-exist with the retinopathy.

If he was my patient, I will suggest to do an EKG ,an echocardiogram of the heart, BUN ,Creatinine and Microalbuminuria test. These result are very important to understand the cause/s of his actual symptoms and to have the right treatment.

Hope I have answered your query.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
