What Does A Painful Bump On The Foot Indicate?

Hello - I have a firm bump on the top of my foot. It has been there for 10 days. Bump is painful to touch and occasionally the top of the foot swells. I can put weight on foot with no pain. I went to Urgent Care and had an xray. The MD said no bone issues, he also rules out a ganglion cyst or tendon damage. Not getting better and still painful. Ideas?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The fact that you can put weight on foot without pain usually rules out bony injury. What is the exact location of swelling? If swelling has appeared acutely and painful to touch, it can be hematoma or bruise. Local ultrasound is useful for diagnosis of soft tissue pathology. Please get it done from radiology center nearby you. Meanwhile, ice compression, limb elevation should be continued. If report is abnormal, please consult orthopedic surgeon nearby your area.

Wishing you good health.
