Just diagnosed with blood in my stool. I am 78, very active, run, swim, bike, do triathlons. Feel great, no colon cancer in my family, no cancer of any type. Could it be an ulcer? Am having all the ncessary tests on Wednesday April 25th. My email is YYYY@YYYY
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Blood in the stool always requires investigation to exclude cancer and precancerous lesions. In most cases though the cause is not malignant. Unfortunately, you haven't provided much information about your case. An ulcer may indeed cause blood in the stool but we usually expect other symptoms to be present as well. You haven't mentioned any other symptom so, I gather there aren't any. One of the most likely causes is hemorrhoids particularly if you've seen blood after a bowel movement when wiping with a tissue. The endoscopic approach is the gold standard to diagnose intestinal lesions and this is what I suggest to my patients when they consult me for blood in the stool.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
