Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 68 year old man in excellent health. 5'9" with weight of 160. I walk 16 miles a week, and the only prescription I take is Losartin for high blood pressure. I have been on that for about a year. But just in the last week when I walk around the house in my socks, I suddenly get the sensation that I just stepped into a cold puddle of water. It is so real, that I reach down to feel the underside of my foot, and it is DRY! It happens 8 to 10 times a day. I cannot figure out what is causing this. I have seen a lot of other people complain of this on the internet, but it seems no one gets an answer as to what causes it.
General & Family Physician, Dr. Imran Zeb's Response
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service. I reviewed your query and here is my answer. Do you feel your feet cold only or there is pain or change in colour as well? Does it occur at rest as well or just after walking for a while and then it get better with rest? How about your cholestrol levels as you said you are hypertensive or do you have any history of cardiac event? Feeling cold feet can be due to environment or peripheral vascular disease. In case of cold environment, you have to wear socks or warm your feet. But if you have peripheral vascular disease then there will be weak or absent peripheral pulses like dorsal pedis artery pulse or tibialis posterior artery, which can be confirmed by doppler ultrasound of the lower limb. For this you have to use drugs which will be available on prescription only to increase blood flow to the foot. So please, do contact your primary doctor for complete examination of the leg. Hope i answered your query. Feel free to ask if i can help you further. Thanks.
