Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Over the past 12 months I have notice a big decline in my sence of smell. I am 55 years old male. Heart attack in 2007. Take several meds for that. Quite smoking 2007. Otherwise good health. Exercise etc. Your thoughts. Would like to get back if possible.
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns...
As per your complain Impaired sense of smell or Anosmia is seen in patients who take medications for heart diseases while it can occur due to a number of conditions, the most common out of which can be blockages in the nose and the maxillary sinuses like polyp in nose or maxillary sinus, nerve damage, head injury, increase in age, diseases like Multiple sclerosis, alzimer's disease and even in hormonal disturbances.. You need to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation has to be done to rule out the exact cause of the problem and he/she can advise you to get MRI of the salivary glands, nasal endoscopy, hormonal profile etc done to confirm the cause and treatment can be planned accordingly..
As per your query you have impaired sense of smell and you had heart attack in 2007 . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like infection like sinusitis or upper respiratory track infection , neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease , hormonal disturbances and Certain prescription medications, such as some high blood pressure medications, can also alter your sense of taste or smell . But in your case it seems to me that impaired sense of smell is probably due to medication taken fro haert condition . I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination . Doctor may order certain test like throat swab test , viral culture test and CT scan . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics like ( amoxicillin or penicillin ) , decongestants for congestion or refer you to neurologist or cardiologist if he/she find it to be caused by neurological problem or medicine take due to heart conditions respectively .
Hope your concern has been resolved.
