What Does Pain Behind The Knees Indicate?

Hi I ve had some back of knee pain for about 9 months now. Until recently it was just a small pain probably a 1/10 but over the last 3 months began to hurt more and more. I originally believe it was a flexibility issue and began stretching more regularly and also started rolling out my calf and foot with a lacrosse ball. However the pain has gotten worse since then. I currently cannot put my leg straight on the ground while sitting but can while laying down but certain angles while laying hurt pretty bad 5/10. The pain is in the back of my knee and I can only describe it as deep in my knee pit. Walking from class to class at my university hurts about a 2/10 but if I walk far begins to hurt less. Any idea what this could be ?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your medical history is suggestive of a possible knee injurie. The knee is your body’s biggest joint and one of its most injury-prone areas. It’s made up of bones that can fracture or move out of joint, as well as cartilage, ligaments, and tendons that can strain or tear. Sometimes pain is a sign of a chronic condition like arthritis that damages the knee gradually over time but i don't think this is your case because your pain is recent. My idea is that it can be a possible injury to the tendon (patelar or biceps femoris tendonitis) or a meniscus tear. Anyway my advice is to consult physically a local orthopedist because it is necessary to do a Knee X-ray or maybe a MRI of the knee to reach the right diagnosis and only than you can have the right treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
