What Does Pain In The Hips Indicate?

I have been having some hip pain for some time now. It is interrupting my sleep and has been effecting my sitting and standing. I am a 61 year old female. At first I thought I pulled a muscle but the pain has lasted too long for that. Should I wait longer to see if the pain improves or schedule a doctor visit? what could the source of the pain be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Hip pain can be due to a number of reasons. It may be due to osteoarthritis as you are saying that you have difficulty in movement at the hip joint.

There is a chance that the pain can be due to a pinched nerve. It can only be confirmed after a thorough physical examination. The physician may advise you a hip x-ray or MRI depending on the result of the physical examination.

Meanwhile, you can take an over the counter painkiller like Advil drug to relieve the pain. Do light stretching exercises and apply a cold compress.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma.Amman
