What Does Pain In The Hips On The Left Side Indicate?

Last spring, May, I was having pain in my left hip. On the outside of the hip walking a distance would make it hurt more. Also on my right leg I could not lift to put on pants or socks etc. it either would not lift of there was extreme pain in the crease (front area where leg bends). There is also tightness in my lower back. I do believe I have ignored my hip flexor sand I thought that was my problem. This summer I began stretching and working gently on my hip flexor. I thought I was making some progress(not nearly what I thought I should have over that length of time) but lately it seems that I really haven t. All of my muscles seem to be stiff and sore all the time. I am just about 65 years old and feel 90. I do have MS which has been mostly in remission for the past 4 years. I have been active all my life and don t understand what is going on and why exercise and stretching do not help. Could there be other reasons?

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1. as you are a diagnosed case of MS [multiple sclerosis] which is a disorder of the nervous system thus remain under regular supervision of Neurologist, since he can determine the best management strategy for your course of the disease.

2. Keeping in mind your Age [65] and symptoms, you should Consult an Orthopedic surgeon [or for a second opinion] regarding hip discomfort/pain since it could be because of hip osteoarthritis , AVN [avascular necrosis], DVT [deep vein thrombosis], PVD [peripheral vascular disorder]

PS. Another major factor to exclude at your AGE is Osteoporosis [Age + Pain], so check with your serum Calcium and BMD [bone mineral density] test.

3.till you get an appointment, best which you can do is to slightly change your lifestyle: i.e. avoidance of poor posture, limitation of excess joint loading, use of the walking stick, avoid sitting on floor & climbing stairs as far as possible, use the commode.

PS. The symptoms have to be carefully assessed by your doctor to ensure that whether it requires immediate medical attention or long-term therapy and also the choice of surgery or hip replacement will depend upon the further stage/ substage so consultation with an Orthopedic Surgeon is highly recommended.
