What Does Pharyngeal Posterior Cyst In MRI Mean?

I have had four surgeries in my R shoulder, between 2003-2011.I am still in severe pain, which there is now pain to my elbow and in my hand, fingers. I had severe nerve damage in my arm and had carpal release surgery in 2011.I just rec d my MRI results for my cervical spine and it shows 2 bulging disc at c-5&c-6, and a pharyngeal posterior cyst and prominent adenoid tissue. Your thoughts on this? Could this be causing all this pain?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Your elbow/ arm and cervical problems may be unrelated to each other. The cervical spine MRI shows that there is degeneration in the discs in between the small bones of the neck at C 5 - C 6 level. This can also cause pressure on the exiting nerve roots on both sides through which the nerves pass. This can cause pain and the severity of pain depends on amount of pressure effects n the nerves.

The posterior pharyngeal cyst is a benign finding and not associated with any significant medical problems that you are experiencing.

The adenoids are tissues in the roof of the nasopharynx and this can cause restriction of airway during sleep leading to snoring.

You must consult a neurosurgeon for your cervical disc bulges and take neurogenic pain relievers. Physical activity must be restricted and you may not make sudden neck movements. Surgical treatment is only given for those in severe pain and not responding to medications taken for weeks to months of treatment.
