What Does Separation Of Lateral Ventricles On Brain Scan Mean?
Hi Docter,
My Nephew is 6 years old and still struggling to walk on his own.He was a breech child and his mother was a Cerebral Palsy child.
He can sit, stand and walk with others help. He looks not quick learner in school. He is not as good as others of his age , this makes me think he is also a CP child
Treatment
1. Underwent a surgery for lengtheing his leg. Seems that one of his leg is long and other one is short.
2. Undergoing physiotherapy for past 2 years.
We recently had a brain scan and the results came back as follows.
We went for brain and spinal cord scam
1. There is evidence of grossly thinned out corpus callosum with paucity of periventricular white matter
leading to dilatation and seperation of lateral ventricles
2. Periventricular gliosis tissue seen
What does this mean? Does this has an effect in my nephew to walk, study etc. Is this curable?
Thanks for asking on healthcaremagic. I have carefully gone through the details provided by you. The child probably suffered from lack of oxygen soon after birth which caused some portions of the brain especially around the ventricles to die away. There could have been a bleeding which would heal by getting that portion get absorbed and healing with scar tissue or gliosis. Corpus callosum is a structure separating the two halves of the brain and prevents electrical stimulus from one side from producing seizures on the other. The loss of brain matter has affected body functions and lead to mental retardation and there is no way you can cure it as the brain cannot regrow. Physiotherapy would be supportive.
Hope that answers your query. Feel free to revert back with further queries if any.
