What Does Severe Weakness In The Legs Indicate?

I have severe weakness in my legs, more notably on my right side. I have has multiple back surgeries with rods and plates with a diagnoses of sensory neuropathy in my feet. I also have right sided neck pain where the right side of my face falls asleep and an area on the back of my neck that has an area of constant itching. I have had MRI s completed with follow up with my Neurosurgeon who has stated there is no need for surgery as nothing is pinched and no nerves are compromised. I have had multiple pain injections that have not helped along with PT to no avail to help with my weakness What diagnoses could be causing these symptoms?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

This indicates peripheral neuropathy which is a result of damage to your peripheral nerves, often causes weakness, numbness and pain, usually in your hands and feet. It can also affect other areas of your body. Treatment actually depends on the right cause. Most common causes are diabetes, alcoholism, inherited disorders or trauma and medications however, many other causes may be seen so tests are required to identify the right one. Till that you can do some general remedies: Avoid factors that may cause nerve damage, including repetitive motions, cramped positions, exposure to toxic chemicals, smoking and overindulging in alcohol. Also take vitamin D supplements and regulate blood sugar levels.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
