What Does Sudden Choking Feeling With Breathlessness Signify?

Today I experienced a choking sensation. I was unable to breath and was gasping for air. It came on suddenly and I was not eating at the time. It felt like my airways suddenly closed. The sensation passed after two to three minutes. It was very frightening and I thought I was going to die.

Hi... You have not mentioned whether it was associated with pain and tightness in the chest. Also it would have been helpful if you had mentioned your age. If you are about 50 years of age or above and the feeling of choking was associated with chest pain, it may have been an attack of angina. You should then get a cardiac consult.
