Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Does Swelling In The Left Hand On A Blood Thinner Indicate?
My dad is 88 years old, taking a blood thinner and not much else. He get shots in the stomack regularly for newly diagnosed RA. He woke up this morning with a swollen left hand. He can t completely close the hand, and it s a little painful to try- it reminds him of when you walk and you ve been swinging your hands so all the blood has gone to the fingertips. Could this be anything we need act on RIGHT NOW? Or is it OK to wait until tomorrow and call his doctor if the hand hasn t gone down?
As your dad is not able to close hand completely, the issue seems to be cellulitis condition of hand which should not be neglected in a patient on a blood thinner.
I recommend primary relief with ice application, keeping hand elevated in the arm sling and consult your doctor tomorrow.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Purva Patel
