What Does The MRI Report Shows?

Help me understand my MRI. I was involved in a car accident in Oct. of this year. My MRI shows l3-4 mild desiccation no herniation of disc. L4-5 mild disc desiccation / mild arthritic hypertrophy of bilateral apophyseal joint, no herniated disc.L5-S1 Right paracentral disc herniation impinging upon thecal sac. The disc hern. protrudes 4mm posterior and 2mm inferiorly into the spinal canal with a disc herniation transverse diameter of 9mm. Disc. desiccation. No neural foramen stenosis. No apophyseal joint abnormalities. Since my accident I am also having trouble with bowel movements. I have no feelings of the need or urge. And lose of sexual sensitivity.

Hello
Thanks for writing to us

According to MRI report you have degenerative disc disease of lumbar spine.
Degenerative changes occurs in spine due to aging and development of weakness in annulus fibrosis which allows herniation of disc.

1.At L3-4 level there is mild desiccation of disc (loss of water).

2.At L4-5 level, there is mild disc desiccation(loss of water). There is also mild arthritic hypertrophy of bilateral apophyseal joints.

3.At L5-S1 there is right paracentral disc herniation which is impinging upon thecal sac. The disc herniated part is protruding 4mm posterior and 2mm inferiorly into the spinal canal with a disc herniation transverse diameter of 9mm.There is also desiccation of disc (loss of water).

Treatment for degenerative lumbar disease includes physiotherapy or surgery.
Effectiveness of both modalities are same. So,physiotherpay should be tried first. It causes strengthening of Para spinal muscles and it prevents further changes.
Surgery should be the last option.
There are also medicines like capsule pregabalin available for pain relief.
Treatment can be planned after consultation with neurosurgeon.
Get well soon.

Take Care
