What Does This Pelvic Cytology Test Result For Severe Inflamation Indicate?

Hi Doctors! Just want to ask about a Cervicovaginal Exfoliative Cytology Report of my 62-year old mother. It says here that a specimen processed and examined but unsatisfactory for evaluation of ephitelial cell abnormality because of INFLAMMATION under the Specimen Adequacy. And based on the interpretation of result, there is a reactive cellular changes associated with severe inflammation (includes typical repair) and atrophy. May I know what would cause the severe inflammation and how this will be treated. Thank you very much.

Hi,

The pelvic cytology report here denotes that:

- There is presence of chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, which is usually due to presence of some bacterial or other sexually transmitted infections.

- Due to presence of features of inflammations, it is not possible to point about epithelial abnormality. For pointing about abnormality of epithelial cells, this specimen is not suitable due to presence of inflammation. Abnormality in epithelial cells are indicators for likelihood of presence of malignancy. Hence, in your case, first the treatment of inflammation is required and afterwards study of abnormal epithelial cells may be undertaken.

- Atrophy of cells may be age related hormonal deficiency ,having this effect on the cells. It needs treatment accordingly, may be with Hormonal replacement therapy, if advised by the gynecologist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
