I have gone through menopause, also have had breast cancer. My gyn will not put me on estrogen. I have to use a vaginal estrogen cream. The cream is not working, my husband and I cannot have sex at all, it hurts so bad! I went to see a urologist today and she said I need to have my vagina stretched? What does this procedure involve?
During vaginal dilatation, vaginal dilators are gradually inserted in vagina to increase the vaginal diameter.
In postmenopausal sexual problems, the issue is related to vaginal atrophy and dryness. This is due to Oestrogen deficiency. However, considering your history of breast cancer, you should avoid hormones systemically; hence local vaginal oestrogen cream. Vagina has got muscles around it which can relax with determination and minimising the pain factor due to dryness.
I would advise you to use copious lubrication during intercourse to have easy penile entry without friction and pain. Please do not use oil based lubricants which are harmful to your genital organs. Use only water based lubricant jellies. Also, during penile insertion, take deep breaths with wide open mouth which will prevent reflex contraction of vaginal muscle. This minimises the pain during penile insertion.
I hope this makes your marital life more enjoyable.
