What Does White Matter Around The Brain Shown In CAT Scan Mean?

My Mom had a CAT Scan & the doctor said there was white matter around her brain & that happens as people get older: that we shouldn t worry about it. She is 74 years old, but over the past year 1/2, we have seen her get more confused, agitated & not acting like herself. Should we be concerned & get a 2nd opinion?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the white matter around brain regions in certain part do indicate possible issue with age related cerebral changes as gliosis and others. When such changes include hippocampus and related structures as amygdala, the memory is affected first with more confusion. I would recommend to continue conservative line of therapy as second opinion is worthless and not going to change any therapeutic options or hopes.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
