What Dosage Of Melatonin Is Advisable For Insomnia?

I m a 74 yr old female & looking for a safe sleep med that s affordable. I ve taken a 5mg. Pill the last 2 nights, but not getting more than a 3-4 hr. Sleep. I ve read that melatonin can be negative in a certain part of the brain. So, what is the Max doseage... I intend to take 2 - 5 mg tabs, tonight, & hope it works. What is your opinion as a Dr. Thank you in advance, Marie g Hilton Pollock Pines, Ca.

Hi,
Thanks for the query. I understand your concern.
Dosage & advise about sleeping pills is decided by personal requirement &health. So you should consult your treating doctor who knows well about your health .
Pills offer you artificial sleep is likely to leave drowsiness next day. it's also habit forming & gets ineffective when used over long time.... so there is no end for changing brands & increasing dosage. So pills are to be restricted for a short course while having some excessive physical stress ( like surgery )or before one start getting a natural sleep with self efforts.
Many factors are involved in getting natural sleep( psychological satiety, physical well being, enough food taken at least 2 hours before sleep, environment & freshness, cozy dim light it offers ....all these factors are to be gained by self help & medical aid ... whenever needful... because these factors decide melatonin the hormone stimulating sleep.
Psychotherapy ( cognitive behavior therapy) would help to manage psychological factors.
Thanks
