Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Foods Should One Avoid When Diagnosed With Gall Stones?
My friend went to the ER today and she was told she passed a gall stone. She told me they did a scan with contrast and found she has 4 more stones. She was given 4 prescriptions: bentyl, coalase, zofran, omprazole. She wants to know what to avoid in vitamins, supplements, and foods. She is very particular to what she puts in her body, and is already doing a low-fat diet.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood your concerns. Since your friend has already been diagnosed as having gall stones in ER, it is imperative to have gallbladder removed as there can be a complications of inflammation, infection, stone impaction and so on in future with dreaded complications. Hence I would advise your friend to undergo surgery as per advise of the Surgeon. Till then continue the medications viz Bentyl, Coalase, Zofran and OMeprazole. Normal diet is fine is stones have already formed and no diet restriction are going to help. Avoid fatty and oily food as it causes compression of gallbladder and can cause gallbladder colic and further complications. Till then get the blood tests for liver and pancreatic functions.
