What Is A Safe Schedule For Tapering Off Of Nebivolol (2.5 Mg Daily) And Clonidine (.05mg Daily)?

What is a safe schedule for tapering off of nebivolol? My doctor put me on clonidine (I currently take .05 mg with supper. I am a non-dipper), after I had been on nebivolol (2.5 mg. with breakfast) for years and now wants me to get off both of them. I have received no guidance as to the safe way to do this, and I know it can be very dangerous.I do know I need to get of the best blocker first. I do not have heart disease and my treadmill tests, EKGs, etc. are normal. There is some stroke on my father's side of the fmily. I am an active 71-year-old female, 5'6", weighing 135 lobs. I eat a healthy diet and walk a brisk 20 minutes 5 days a week.

Nebivolol and clonidine are used for the treatment of hypertension . Hypertension is a life long treatment. If hepertension is not controlled properly, it may lead to heart attack, stroke and kidney failure in the long run. I wonder why you want to stop these medicines !!They are very safe drugs even taken for lifelong. If you are not suffering from hypertension, you can think of tapering. One important thing to keep in mind is that sudden stopage of nebivolol may produce irregular heart beats and death.Similarly sudden stopage of clonidine may produce severe hypertension leading to leakage of blood in the brain causing stroke and death. Hence, it is essential that reducing the dose of the drug should be gradual over a period of 6-8 weeks, nebivolol by 0..5mg/week and clonidine 0.01 mg /week.
