Lack of motions or having constipation can be very distressing especially in old age. Before starting medications, we suggest some lifestyle modifications like increase fibre containing food, increase water intake and regular walk after meals to facilitate bowel movements. If symptoms do not improve, then we suggest isphagul husk 2 spoons daily with water or castor oil. Other options include lactulose, sodium picosulphate or enema if acceptable to patients. However, any medicine should be taken only after consultation with your doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammad Zahir Shah, Internal Medicine Specialist
