Yes. Approximately 2 yrs ago I hit my thumbnail against the side of the porch, resulting in it splitting about a third of the way up. Ever since it keeps on splitting no matter what I do. I have applied tissue with crazy glue, tea bag with crazy glue, even steri strips with crazy glue. I almost have the nail grown out, then it accidentally hits something and splits some more. I'm thinking that what might have to be done is to have my nail removed and let a new one grow in. Would this be correct? If so, what would be involved in such a procedure and who would do it?
Your problem looks like that of a fungal infection of the nail . Your nail is splitting down again and again as it is not a normal healthy one. Nails become weak when they are infected by fungal infections. You should see a nearby dermatologist and get yourself checked for the same. You will need a long term treatment with oral antifungals once the diagnosis is established.
I can understand your concern for the split nail. It can be due to the cause of damage to nail root form where the nail grows.
The best part is obviously to go for nail excision from its base so that the nail should grow back normally.
It is a simple surgical procedure and takes 7-14 days to recover. If you are not diabetic tehn you cna go for this surgery.
You should preferably meet a surgeon who can help you best in the excision procedure. DO not try any home remedies as will not help you out in the split nails. You can take biotin and calcium pantothenate with good protein diet which helps in getting strong nail.
Take care.
