Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Is The Cause And Treatment For Muscle Cramps?
I have been having muscle cramps while doing moderate to heavy work,(cycling, using heavy tools, using extremities to operate machines) and I have experimented with Gatorade, juices and other similar drinks. I have had no good results and now I have been put on anti-seizure medicine for the past 3 years. Other symptoms come and go on a infrequent basis. For example, sometimes I get nauseous and constant itching but the itching is relieved only to start some other place(s).
Dear patient frequent muscle cramps is a sign of hypocalcemia means low blood calcium level. Lower blood calcium leads to higher muscle irritability and muscle cramps. Since you are on anti seizure medication you are more susceptible to hypocalcemia. Drugs like phenytoin and other anti seizure medication lead to low blood calcium level. Kindly do testing for blood calcium level from reputed pathology lab. After blood collection start taking calcium preparation such as tablet shelcal thrice a day. Along with that take vitamin d3 60000 iu once a week for 4 weeks and you will be fine.
