What Is The Cause Of Bleeding After Taking Prometrium?
I am 54 year-old female. Have been in menopause for 4 yrs. I am wearing an estrogen patch and was supposed to be taking Prometrium beginning the first day of the month through the tenth. I was depressed and not thinking clearly when I began this therapy. I took it for the first month, but for the last 5, I forgot to take the Prometrium. I have been bleeding since the week before Christmas. Took the Prometrium from Jan 1-10. Bleeding subsided on about the third day, but began again on the 7th day. The bleeding is clotty and bright red.
It is important for you to take the prometrium every month as prescribed, to prevent episodes of irregular bleeding, but more importantly, to prevent the development of uterine cancer. When you take only estrogen without a progesterone like the prometrium, you are at risk for uterine cancer. You should continue taking the medicine as prescribed, and your symptoms should improve. However, you should also see your gynecologist to discuss whether or not it would be appropriate to get an ultrasound or possibly a biopsy of your uterine lining to check for hyperplasia (a condition which could lead to cancer) or cancer. I hope this is helpful, please let me know if you have any further questions.
