What Is The Cause Of Frequent Watery Stools In An Infant Post Treatment For Amoebiasis ?
hi,I m annielyn,my son was diagnosed as having amoebiasis last March 5. He was treated with metronidazole then until yesterday, March 13. But, still, my son is having frequent watery stool , almost 10 times a day or more. Wat could be possibly wrong with him. My son is 8 months old.
Hi Rolan
In my 35 years of practice as a pediatrician, I have hardly ever seen an 8 months old baby suffering from Amoebiasis. However rarely it may occur due to contaminated food or water. You have already given Metronidazole for 10 days which is quite sufficient. I wonder if you got his stool tested for Ph and reducing substances. Moreover a culture should be done to rule out a bacterial infection. If these tests are reported to be negative you can try a 2 weeks course of Zinc syrup 1/2 a teaspoon twice a day and probiotics like darolac or vibact which may help in prolonged diarrhoea. But do consult a pediatrician if these don't help.
Good luck
Hi
Welcome to HCM
First of all I would like to inform you that Amoebiasis is very uncommon in this age group.Viral diarrhora is the most common(sometimes bacteria) causes of loose stool in infancy. And I also would like to know about the diagnosis as you not mentioned any soot test report. The treatment of loose stool depends on the various factors like presence of dehydration, sign of infection, blood in stool etc.
So please visit your pediatrician regarding the diagnosis and treatment.
Thanking you.
