What Is The Exercise That Can Be Done After Median Sternotomy?
Hello I had a median sternotomy 3 months ago for a thymoma, I was wondering what type of exercise can I perform at this time. I used to lift weight and cardio and I would like to ease into it again. What type of exercises can I do that won t strain my chest that much? I did one cardio routine with no problems but then started to get a little wheezy (I also have asthma) when doing some shadow boxing, --which I think is more due to the chest muscles more than my asthma. Any suggestions?
Hello and thanks for your question. It will be good for you to start some aerobic exercise and starting slowly and building up is a good idea. At three months out you should be able to do some light weight lifting and the shadow boxing, but again, you will need to start very slowly and build up gradually. If it is possible for you to see a physical therapist they can guide you into exercise in the safest way. Regards, Dr. Robinson
