What Is The Prognosis After Suffering A Massive Stroke?

My Brother in-law had a stroke seven days ago on both sides of the brain. It was told to us it was a a massive stroke. We are not sure how it happen but he play s minor league football and he is not a large guy only about 5 10 160. But the stroke happen while he was playing basketball he was elbowed in the head and started throwing up and his left side slumped. My wife says he responds by squeezing her hand but i have not seen this. His eyes look as if no ones there. He had brain stem to release fluid that did work so the doctor removed a small portion of scull and ceribelium he looks a lot better but now the Doc placed a tube in his neck that is attached to a machine to help him breath what can I expect from hear.

Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted the details of your brother-in-law.

Based on the description, he seems to have suffered a massive brain stroke. We required the official CT scan report of the patient to give you more information about the likely disabilities he may face and the chances of recovery.

However, it seems that he is getting better. The surgery has been done to save his life. Tracheostomy tube (in the neck) would help him in breathing as well as clearing any secretions in the throat.

For feeding, a pipe in the nose (Ryle's tube) may be required.

He would need good physiotherapy and speech therapy to improve his chances of recovery.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

Best wishes,
