What Is The Prognosis For Newborn Hepatitis?

our newborn grandchild was diagnosed w/hepatitis, the type is yet to be determined. However, they had to take a biopsie to determine the diagnoses. the baby was premature by 6 wks and delivered by C section. The mother had a seizure that required emergency delivery. What is the prognosis and what will the treatment be. Can the baby recover or will there always be some type of treatment

Pediatrician, Surgery 's  Response
Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns. In small baby for first few months the hepatitis/Jaundice may be because of two reason
1. Neonatal cholestasis syndrome
2. Surgical jaundice.
Prognosis and treatment will be based on biopsy report . Many neonatal hepatitis are curable. To completely answer your question following reports needs to be updated. Bilurubin level (Direct component). liver function test. Ultrasound report.
Based on that further work up needs to be planned.
Hope i have answered your question. Please let us know the reports.

wish your grandchild speedy recovery.
